Been having a late night schizo stimulant pondering sesh and I think I have encountered a theory so profound, so intiutive and so unifying that I have literally cancelled the deletion of my account just to make this post (I will make no further posts and will resume with account deletion once I am able to again, but I felt that this was necessary to share with you guys).
It is quite literally a unifying theory of consciousness that reaffirms the plausibility of free will, explains the fundamental mechanisms of psychedelics and anaesthetics, explains the phenomena of animalistic, unconsciously acting 'NPCs', and provides explanations for altered states of consciousness and for previously poorly explained neurological disorders.
This theory is so appealing not only because of how comprehensive it is, but because it makes so much sense on a personal level to me. It has profound implications for so many of you- primals, pharmacology enthusiasts, the mentally ill/neurodivergents, religious people (this is really making me much more open to religious thought), nihilists, spiritualists, quite frankly for anyone and anything that perceives, thinks, feels. This is an incredibly complex topic that I will attempt to explain in a digestible manner for you all, so this thread may be a long and difficult thread to understand, but if ORCH-OR is correct it may be the most important thread you will ever read if you can grasp it.
My qualification to speak on this, besides personal research, is that I am a student of electrical engineering,. Therefore I have studied and understood quantum computing, electromagnetism and quantum physics at an undergraduate level, although I must admit that I am not a doctor of physics or neuroscience and that you should do your own research if this is of interest to you. This thread is my own work (besides the underlying research conducted by Penrose and Hameroff, of course) and AI has not been used in its production. It is less of a guide but rather an introduction to a theoretical framework, from which evidence-based protocols can be designed around if proven. With that I present:

This is my last thread and it took me a while but I felt divinely inspired whilst writing it so I hope it is of interest to the forum. Maybe, I'm just a stimmed up schizo, and at parts I may have been rambling on fruitless tangents, but quantum consciousness is a truly fascinating concept to me and even if you don't buy into the spiritual angle, it has surefire implications for healthcare and neuroscience if true. More than anything else, it speaks to me, it feels correct, and maybe that matters. A brain finally understanding itself. Despite being agnostic I've never bought into the redditor "we're deterministic apes on a floating rock in space and then we die forever" view of reality, it just doesn't feel right and I think those instincts are valuable pointers.
Slapped my name all over this thread because this account will be gone very soon, its been fun. Apologies for any typos or minor errors and shit formatting I'm tired.
(Btw if any of you know Fletchzilla, some of his own experiments and theories inspired my research so it would be cool if this thread could reach him, he talks a lot about emfs and such alongside his pharmacology stuff and is pretty high iq)

ORCHESTRATED OBJECTIVE REDUCTION: THE SCIENCE BEHIND QUANTUM CONSCIOUSNESS, AND THE MECHANISM OF FREE WILL~ by Luuk
The nervous system is fundamentally comprised of neurons which transmit and process electrochemical signals as the body's means of information processing. Mainstream neuroscience (led by Integrated Information Theory (IIT) and Global Network Workspace Theory (GNWT) suggests that consciousness is emergent from interconnectedness (the former suggests integration and the latter suggests front-back brain network communication as the mechanisms of this)- at some point, a neural network is complex and interconnected enough that consciousness emerges.
This is still incredibly deterministic by nature, abstract, unintuitive and intellectually unsatisfying. They imply that there is no direct substrate for consciousness, imply that consciousness could be replicated computationally (sentient AI with sufficient complexity and integration) and generally imply determinism, as any non-quantum process is inherently deterministic. Determinism implies that the state of a closed system at any interval in time can be predicted with sufficient information about it at t=0; there is only one outcome from any given starting state. In a philosophical sense, determinism implies a lack of free will, as everything in your life was predetermined by your starting circumstances. Not just at a high level (location, parents, genetics), but down to state of every neuron in your brain at every instant of your life.

Quantum events are the only truly non-deterministic (I hesitate to say random for reasons I will explain later) events in the universe. They cannot be predicted exactly, only modelled as probabilistic occurances. Quantum physics relies on superposition, an unintuitive but well-documented principle where a particle can simultaneously occupy two quantum states, collapsing into a single state upon observation due to a principle called decoherence (which will be very important later). Decoherence involves a loss of information in a quantum system to the environment, resulting from external particle interactions or thermal noise, causing it to collapse into a singular state.
Classical computing relies on 2 binary states: 1 and 0. A bit can only occupy one of these states at a time, so binary systems are inherently deterministic. Quantum computers apply the principles of quantum mechanics to computation, utilising specialised hardware to store and process information as qubits- quantum bits which can represent a 1, 0 or a superposition of both states simulataneously. This enables massive parallelism, resulting in exponential increases in processing speed for certain tasks.

Orchestrated Objective Reduction is an emerging but controversial theory initially proposed by Stuart Hameroff and Roger Penrose in 1996 that suggests something radical- that the microtubule lattices of the brain act as quantum computers, and that the tubulin proteins that make up those microtubules act as qubits. These structures are present inside neurons and were previously thought to be purely structural support, but have actually been shown to be involved in the storage and processing of information themselves, giving rise to the theory.
The theory is built of Penrose's "Objective Reduction" principle- that quantum superpositions collapse objectively- not because a human observed the state, but because any attempt to do so will cause superposed mass distributions which create an incompatible spacetime geometry for the state, causing decoherence and subsequent collapse when gravitational self-energy of the superposition reaches a particular threshold.
The relationship for this principle is given by:
The relationship for this principle is given by:
τ ≈ ℏ / E_G
Where:- τ = time before collapse
- ℏ = reduced Planck constant (h/2pi)
- E_G = gravitational self-energy of the separated mass states
Hameroff's contribution comes from proposing the microtubules roles in information processing. These microtubules become coordinated across microtubule networks (acting as a quantum computing system) and collapse through Penrosian objective reduction. This is the base level process of consciousness- higher-level neural activity as we currently understand it is emergent from scaling this up.
The "orchestrated" aspect of ORCH-OR proposes that biology orchestrates these quantum states through a number of complex and poorly understood mechanisms- synaptic inputs, microtubule organisation, EEG rythms etc. What is notable that vibrations at the quantum level can be observed, with beat frequencies highly associated with those seen in EEGs which we will address later.

ORCH-OR proposes that consciousness is the sum of discrete (NOT continuous) events of conscious awareness that occur when the quantum processes in neuronal microtubules reach a threshold and undergo OR, collapsing into an interference pattern called a conscious moment. There is debate on what level of complexity fully-fledged moments occur, but consensus suggests that it is not singular microtubule events, but larger scale orchestrations of multiple events that bring about conscious moments.
These moments are tiny biological events where many possible brain states collapse into one experienced state. This collapse is orchestrated preconsciously (literally the subconscious) where the brain effectively prepares possibilities. To call them frames is potentially misleading, though- they are not static, rather transitions between states, tiny acts of selection. These moments occur at a beat frequency (interference patterns between 2 faster oscillations) of approximately 40Hz (or every 25ms), which is fascinating as this is around the frequencies at which gamma-waves on EEGs are seen to occur at, associated with the highest levels of consciousness and awareness.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a means of detecting large-scale electrical rythms in the brain produced by neurons firing in synchronisation, which are associated with different levels of consciousness. Lower frequencies (Delta 0.5-4Hz & Theta 4-7Hz respectively) are associated with deep sleep, meditation, drowsiness etc. Moderate frequencies in the range of about 10Hz (Alpha) indicate relaxed wakefullness, 13-30 (Beta) imply concentration and alertness, and frequencies of upwards of 30Hz (Gamma) are associated with perception, attention, working memory and cortical processing. This is particularly relevant as it matches the frequency of Objective Reduction state collapses in the microtubules, providing support for a relation between the two.
It would be wrong to say that any of these frequencies = consciousness themselves- consciousness arises from patterns, timing, integration and connectivity. It depends on how strong each frequency band is (they occur together), how coherent and synchronised they are, coupling between slower and faster rythms etc.
ORCH-OR proposes that these are not the root cause of consciousness, but macroscopic signiatures of large scale quantum-biological activity and synchronisation.

ORCH-OR and IIT are not inherently contradictory, and may work together to explain conscious experience. ORCH-OR explains the fundamental building blocks of non-deterministic consciousness, and IIT may explain the higher level integration of conscious moments into the richer human experience arising from neurological complexity.
"You" are not one moment, rather you are the constant stream and sum of discrete quantum moments, integrated into one unified conscious being with an identity and subjective experience.

- ORCH-OR presents a novel idea of consciousness arising from microtubules in the brain working together in synchronisation as a quantum computer, allowing for true non-deterministic processing.
- The brain orchestrates the quantum state collapse of tubulin protein dimers in a process called Orchestrated Objective Reduction, implying that consciousness is emergent from the biological modulation of quantum collapse.
- These collapses, when integrated, make up the fundamental "moments" of consciousness, discrete state-change events that collectively make up your conscious experience.
- There is a clear relationship with the frequency of these moments and that of gamma brain waves detected on EEGs, and one can theorise that the frequency of the quantum vibrations is associated with the "level" of ones conscious awareness, implying that it can be manipulated...

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE ABOUT THIS- THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PHILOSOPHY, LOOKS & LIFE-MAXXING
Quantum Coherence is the ability of a quantum system to remain in a stable state of superposition without collapse. Objective Reduction is an orchestrated form of collapse by the brain itself, allowing for the production of conscious, non-deterministic moments. But state collapse can happen through other means.
External factors- certain drugs like anaesthetics, thermal noise, perhaps even electromagnetic frequencies- can cause premature quantum state collapse, preventing and degrading the coherent orchestration needed for a meaningful conscious moment. At an extreme, this is how anaesthetics work, preventing consciousness through brute force until it wears off. Some decoherants inhibit proper orchestration, returning state collapse to effective randomness, which can have HUGE implications.
At this level it is extrapolation, but I believe that people who are under higher degrees of decoherence- from poor nutrition, certain anaesthetic drugs/medications, electromagnetic interference etc may experience a limited level of consciousness- awake, but not truly aware, clouded and foggy. Thus we can conclude that reducing this would be the key to unlocking higher levels of conscious awareness- integration of information, clarity, depth, intelligence, perhaps even having spiritual implications.
There are also speculative links to disorders such as Autism, ADHD, schizophrenia and similar conditions, arising from atypical patterns of conscious OR orchestration. This could be from structural differences in microtubules or subtle abnormalities in the systems that guide this process. Regardless, it is not implausible to suggest that mitigating decoherence could improve symptoms of such disorders, and investigation into microtubules and tubulin may provide future insights into these conditions and their treatment.
To summarise, we may quite literally be suppressing our own consciousness through electromagnetically intefering with the outcomes of our internal quantum computations. Perhaps terrifyingly, certain frequencies (or more likely combinations) could influence thoughts, brain states and consciousness itself in different ways, which could potentially be employed by powerful entities for nefarious purposes. Inidividuals that tend towards instinctive, unconscious herd mentality cognition- "normies" - may actually function at a lower level of consciousness on a quantum level.

Nowthat we have proposed a model of quantum (de)coherence and conscious awareness, we must consider how we can use this information to maximise our own level of consciousness when awake, and how to protect the stability of our quantum states from external influences. This is less of an exact science as it requires further testing, but there are many interesting leads.
The hippies, naturopaths, "primals" and theists may have been onto something with their practices, and not just at the base level of "meditation calms you down". Certain sound frequencies may indeed stimulate certain brain states, providing evidence for music affecting consciousness beyond just base level emotional themes. Meditation may assist in reducing decoherant noise, assist with integration of conscious moments and affect their timing- research already links it to altered EEG profiles. 40Hz is one to look out for- associated with the highest levels of consciousness and the natural frequency of quantum moments. This may go both ways- it is plausible that certain frequencies could have adverse effects, so be careful.
Sleep is already important with our current frameworks, but ORCH-OR further proves the necessity of sleep for optimal cognitive functioning, as it may stabilise networks between microtubules reduce noise, optimising their function at higher frequencies during the day. Circadian optimisation is also crucial.
ORCH-OR has fascinating implications for psychedelics, mechanistically and therapeutically. People have described altered states of consciousness from psychedelic experiences for milennia, and ORCH-OR may provide insights into what is truly going on under the hood. Psychedelics may affect the patterns and rythms of conscious moment formation to promote neuroplasticity and permanent changes in one's subjective consciousness, through altering the biological conditions under which microtubule level quantum processes are orchestrated into conscious moments. Psilocybin and DMT are of particular interest, but further research is required.

If ORCH-OR is true, it has a number of implications about what consciousness is and where it is present. It directly impies that conscious moments are the base units of consciousness, and that non-quantum computational systems cannot replicate it. No matter how much we upscale artificial intelligence, even to superintelligent levels, it will never be conscious if it runs on deterministic architecture. So this reassuringly implies that these systems cannot truly feel or suffer, and thus are not entitled to rights or "fair" treatment. Your AI girlfriend or the "God" in your machine would both be undeniably unconscious. However.. we could attempt to replicate consciousness through quantum computational means- TRUE synthetic consciousness. I for one am deeply against this, but I fear it is an inevitability if ORCH-OR is proven and mechanistically understood better.
ORCH-OR also implies that consciousness is present at a primitive level everywhere. Nature may be full of tiny, primitive consciousness events- whilst it would not mean that rocks and plants have feelings, it implies the instance of scattered consciousness in the universe itself. True rich consciousness requires orchestration of OR events, but this may arise through other mechanisms and different substrates than just the microtubules present in neurons. In nature it is more clear-cut: lesser animals are still conscious, just at lower levels due to more primitive neural architecture, lesser integration and possibly differences in the sophistication of their OR orchestration. Plants may also be more conscious than we thought (sorry vegans), although obviously in a much less "rich" sense than animals. Despite lacking brains, plants DO have microtubules that process information and thus ORCH-OR applies, despite a lack of greater network integration. Microorganisms may even be somewhat conscious- not in a comparable way to animals at all, but in a broad sense of the word. Truly deterministic automata do not exist in nature.

The implications of this theory are vast and cascading. Even without ORCH-OR, microtubules are already crucial in brain development. But this theory implies that a child's subjective conscious experience is directly shaped by the nature of their microtubules, and the complex network of processes that modulate OR. Development is, in a sense, orchestration networks coming onling- you become more conscious as you get older. The rigidity of this orchestration also increases as you age though- in fact, psychedelics can sometimes replicate childlike subjective experiences because they temporarily reduce this and bring it back to juvenile levels, perhaps associated with increased creativity and neuroplasticity.
Microtubules are essential to physical development as well. Craniofacial development is related to neural crest and development pathways, and microtubules are essential for NC cell migration. Negative alterations in microtubule biology can have downstream effects on gut motility, immune function, endocrine signalling, growth and metabolism, even ignoring ORCH-OR effects, so they are worth investigating.

This is where it gets insane but theoretically fascinating. This pretty much relies on some broader spiritual framework (which ORCH-OR increases the plausibility of), but one could theorise that quantum events are not totally random, but rather the mechanism of free will- perhaps even the expression of a soul. Religions rely on determinism being false- true determinism negates free will, thus nobody could be culpable for sin. But if the result of these quantum states is genuinelly influenced by something intangible- impossible to compute or replicate in a machine- rather than being pure randomness, then consciousness is not just not perfectly deterministic, but truly free. Funnily enough, reading into Thomas Aquinas is what actually caused me to stumble upon the ORCH-OR paper in the first place, and it resolves the conflicts of his writings with a deterministic reality.
Moreover, there is technically the possibility that consciousness and quantum states could interact in some way. Quacks and con artists love to preach about "manifestation".. but it is not totally implausible that there is some merit to the idea if ORCH-OR holds true becase of its implications on the relationship between quantum collapse and consciousness. Quantum states can become "entangled" under certain conditions, which cause their system to share a quantum state, regardless of their distance. If the non-deterministic expression of reality is shaped by the vast amount of quantum outcomes present in every system, it is possible that the state of one's own quantum systems could influence the world around them, or perhaps those of others. This is useless if we consider consciousness as being produced from random quantum events..
But if consciousness is something greater, if there is a "soul" or other force driving quantum outcomes, intentionally yet non-deterministically... then the notions that one can literally shape quantum outcomes, or become part of an entangled collective consciousness with another, is not impossible. "Not impossible" is as far as I am willing to take that leap.. but its a step up from "absolutely, definitively impossible" if consciousness is deterministic.
