Osteogenesis Modulation: Induction of Mandibular Bone Growth in Adults by Electrical Field for Aesthetic Purposes

A new technique in plastic surgery termed Osteogenesis Modulation is described. This technique uses a surgically implanted, battery-operated medical device to deliver customized electrical pulses to produce mandibular bone growth. This device was designed to be a temporary, nonpermanent implant. The purpose of this study was to review both the safety and efficacy of Osteogenesis Modulation.

Results​

In all patients, symmetrical mandibular bone growth was observed with good-to-excellent aesthetic results. The overall follow-up period was 39 months. Cephalometric controls taken 3 to 6 months after the device removal showed an average increase in mandible length of 5.26mm (range, 2.83–7.60mm)

Conclusion​

Preliminary clinical results suggest that Modulation can be a practical tool to augment bone contours indicated for patients with mandibular hypoplasia and microgenia with normal occlusion. We achieved acceptable long-term correction of mandibular hypoplasia and microgenia without using osteotomies, genioplasty, BSSO, distraction osteogenesis, alloplastic implants, or tissue fillers. Preliminary clinical results suggest that Modulation is a safe, minimally invasive, and effective alternative treatment for the long-term correction of mandibular hypoplasia and microgenia in selected cases. Further applications of Modulation in plastic surgery are currently being tested.

This is quite interesting. Studies are constantly proving that LMHFV and acoustic stimulation can increase bone density

u retard this is millimeter level remodeling. If this were meaningfully replacing osteotomies, we’d already see standardized devices and adoption by maxillofacial surgeons. None of that exists or ever will with this technique because you can't change the blueprint of the face.

Solely for mandible?
 
u retard this is millimeter level remodeling. If this were meaningfully replacing osteotomies, we’d already see standardized devices and adoption by maxillofacial surgeons. None of that exists or ever will with this technique because you can't change the blueprint of the face.
Milimeters matter
 
I've read this study and it's interesting but the downtime is huge and nobody has ever replicated this DIY

A lot of you guys need to understand that milimeters matter. 3 mm induction can reverse a lot of age if done in a big area or especific landmarks. Thats not an implants substitute.

I mean it could be promising but with skeletal discrepancies such as a class 3, idk how could this work and considering that is not completly a lack of size but of positioning of the bones

Has huge application for cosmetic surgery if it gets approval. Mostly for people over 50 though, as there is natural bone erosion that starts to take places. Surgeons constantly talk about how bone erosion is an issue during facelifts. As skin no longer properly drapes over the frame, even if you've restored the laxity and ligaments.

Yeah I'm sure all the surgeons would engage in mass malpractice. Via implanting unapproved experimental devices in their general practice population.

I tend to agree that it won't replace most maxillofacial surgery for the structural reasons you stated. But the idea that somehow it would already be in use is equally as retarded.
