This isn't a a surprise to anyone? A 4KB Atari chess engine was written to do one thing insanely well while LLMs are giant general purpose probability machines not dedicated chess machines. Of course a hyper optimized program will beat a massive model at the one task it was handcrafted for. It's like acting shocked when a scalpel outperforms a Swiss Army knife at surgery.
