So I’ve had suspected proptosis/TED (bulging eyes) and I’ve also been diagnosed with Lagophalmos which is the inability to close the eye. These were confirmed by both a optician and a gp, however the thyroid test came back and it was normal so they referred me to a local ophthalmologist for a routine appointment ( I was in a lot of pain during this so routine was not fair or acceptable by the NHS)

So I just kinda had to accept to wait 8-9 months, however the pain in my eye got so bad from the dryness due to Lagophalmos, that I had to go to the A&E. They did a bunch of tests and gave me eye drops and ointment to put on, and told me if those don’t work surgery is likely necessary. I’ve told my parents too that I want someone specific if it is surgery since it’s likely going to consist of me lifting my lower eyelid up significantly, so they agreed to pay if surgery is needed.

They also tested my hertel measurement for my proptosis, and it measured in at 18mm which is considered normal, however I’m likely going to ask for a MRI just to make sure it’s not an inaccurate measurement.

Now the problem is that do you guys think it’s worth it for me to just get canthoplasty in the UK with Daniel Erza (works with moorsfield which my dad trusts fully, so higher chance of him allowing it) or going abroad and getting it done for cheaper and try to convince him it will be fine.

Cantho is called almond eye surgery from his clinic as it’s just more popular. However he’s defo the best in the UK for eyelid work by far, but he quotes around 4.5-8k for both eyes total. Results are great too from him, but any other surgeon recommendations would be appreciated 🙏.

TLDR: (ChatGPT)
Diagnosed with lagophthalmos and suspected proptosis/TED by my optician and GP. Thyroid tests came back normal but the NHS referred me to an ophthalmologist with an 8–9 month “routine” wait, even though I was in a lot of pain. Dryness got so bad I had to go to A&E, where they gave me drops/ointment and said surgery might be needed if it doesn’t improve and told me to come back in 3 months.

If surgery is needed, I’m deciding between getting canthoplasty (“almond eye surgery”) in the UK with Daniel Ezra (expensive ~£4.5k–£8k but very reputable and my dad trusts him) or going abroad for a cheaper option. My dad is more likely to fund the Daniel Erza one than abroad but yea no clue rn though.

Also any surgeon recommendations abroad would be appreciated thank you.

@BronzeSpartan2 they said I don’t have proptosis and I measured in at 18mm for my hertel measurement, do you think it’s worth it asking them if I could do an MRI to make sure?

Dr Ezra is good but just insanely expensive. U can get cantho abroad for like 2k.

@Nahorscend or @bossman may be able to give better answers than me I’m unsure tbh.

Thanks for tag.

An average Hertel measurement would be 15-16mm, and the “normal” range is considered to be 12-21mm.

A CT scan should corroborate but Hertel is pretty accurate so there’s no need. There’s also ways you can measure it on your phone

Any bulginess (I don’t recall if your eyes actually looks bulgy in appearance) is probably just a negative vector morphology which is common for your ethnicity.

If Ezra is 4.5k-8k total, I’d just go with him. It’ll be the most convenient. The cheaper alternatives are not cheaper by a lot, and you’ll have to do far more travelling.

Yea seems like a negative vector too, i think its just the poor browridge and nasal projection combined with a negative vector which makes my eyes look bulgy ( also scleral show )

What would be an Ideal Hertel Measurement? Is it even worth it for me to consider OD (likely just fat decompression because itll be 3mm or less) in the future if mines 18mm. Yea ill likely go to Erza, he seems quite good. Im probably going to book a consultation after my next checkup at the hospital in around 1-3 months depending on when they want to see me.
