some people argue against pascal's wager using the argument "but there are thousands of religions bro"

problem, most religions are extremely obscure and.or polytheistic, with no eternal punishment

the only religions with eternal punishment are Christianity and Islam. I myself am Christian, but I won't debate Christianity vs Islam here in this thread

but still, even if you cant know for sure which one is right, its only two religions, so you still, by investing in a religion, getting at least a 50% chance to succeed at Pascal's Wager

ancient christianity and islam are also very obscure and you wouldn't want to asociate with people today that are still living exactly after their respective book and by pascals wager you'd just hedge your bet between an infinite amount of other options

just because they have the most followers and the most severe punishments, doesn't discredit any ancient cave religion that also had some stupid cruel punishments

Obviously if you only pretend to have faith for the reason that there's a 50% chance it might be true you're going to Hell anyway

Hope that isn't the case, but even if it isn't it will probably be reincarnation and that is shit because you never remember living in the past, so whats the difference really, its over

Good point but I would add that many pre Abrahamic faiths are seen as divinely inspired or simply demonic outright

Heaven also doesn't make sense to me tbh because of the infinite thing, what makes the most sense is somehow reincarnating but remembering every memory. But that makes zero sense too actually, you will just get depressed cause you will miss all your loved ones from the previous life. Its over truly :feelsrope:

Basically yes
Greek thinkers like Plato, Homer etc are seen as having been blessed by God even if they’re not Christian or Muslims
Lots of demons are actually ancient gods like Zeus, Thor, Ba’al who are seen as having been evil

Judaism has no afterlife
You die and G-D doesn’t give a shit
maybe he does exist but in no way shape or form does he give a shit about us. he's evil if anything especially when it comes to the concept of hell

Morals are a completely man-made construct which doesn't exist

You are trying to impute your own standards of 'good' onto an incomprehensibly greater and wiser being. The age old "problem" of: "if God is real THEN HOW COME THERE'S PEE PEE? Why doesn't the limited sphere of creation observed by me conform exactly with my personal moral precepts?"

In reality, what you call suffering might very well be a necessary part of securing the best possible existence for you and the world around you. "Good" only has value in reference to its absence, and if you were gifted with the things you call good you would find that they would soon lose all their value. Longing, privation, and melancholy are in themselves highly "aesthetic" conditions that constitute an essential part of man's life. It may be very well that certain beings are mired in these sentiments and could not be conceived of otherwise.

In short, read Leibniz's Theodicee, which is barely longer than my post.

Moreover, any belief in God must necessarily accept that he is benevolent. If an omnipotent being were truly tyrannical, what's to stop him from throwing his creation around like a ragdoll - from one unimaginably great torment to the next incomprehensible bewilderment. As a dependently originated being, how do you even trust your own judgment if you assume it was ultimately given to you by a malevolent god? How can your intellect be trustworthy enough in that case to give you reliable information about the world around you, to say nothing of the nature of this supposed demiurge himself?

Pascal's Wager is fundamentally flawed by the existence of Islam: When you have two rival religions that both claim to have a monopoly on the afterlife, with both threatening hell to the unbelievers, then truly the only irrational choice is in fact not to take a stand.

i've read/heard these arguments countless times, it's still not convincing

@thickdickdaddy27
God in the Old Testament even states he doesn’t want to create a hell so instead he makes life on earth hell

you're overthinking it really, say if Izlam/Xtianity is true, then Heaven and Hell exist. You only need good arguments for one of them, but this is a degenerate forum, so I won't argue.

it’s a beautiful quote but the New Testament is very different from the old
Jesus is nice and loving but God in the OT is very angry

Pascal's wager is retarded because its construction is arbitrary, ie how do you know that eternal punishment isn't handed out for blind devotion and eternal reward for atheism?

Pascal's wager is flawed because it assumes faith to be a voluntarily attained state. You can't choose to believe in something without being convinced, that's called pretending

will send you to hell forever
Your god (lowercase g) sounds narcissistic as fuck. Need for praise and eternal adoration isn't a godly quality

yeah. religion is just bored retards coping. Mundane life isn't very exciting and that's hard to accept, might as well fool yourself into believing that after you leave this world you're gonna have some fun

This didn't address my point in the slightest.

If you wanna go that route then you'll also have to give up your god being the objective moral standard that we derive our ethics from

You can't force yourself to believe in something. Even if you're aware of Pascal's wager, if the religion isnt convincing enough to you personally, you wouldnt be a true believer and would go to hell anyway.
