rote memorization for acquiring some kind of academic credential isn't bad in of itself, it depends on the kind you acquired with it. A PHD means that you created something unique, original and conducive to progress, so it's bad. PHD's are getting handed out like candy nowadays to memorization grinders which is a problem, it used to be the actually intelligent ppl who got them
