I recently noticed something interesting regarding philtrum height and the mentalis (chin) muscle.
The two examples below received Botox injections into the mentalis muscle to correct chin dimpling. One thing that stood out was how their philtrum height appeared to change afterward.
The Basic Idea
Some people have an overactive mentalis muscle, which can create chin dimpling. As the muscle contracts, it pushes the lower lip upward, creating the appearance of a shorter philtrum.
In simple terms:
- More active mentalis muscle = lower/shorter-looking philtrum height
- Less active mentalis muscle = higher/longer-looking philtrum height
1. If You Want to DECREASE Your Philtrum Height
The theory is that you need to make the mentalis muscle stronger.
Potential drawbacks:
- Increasing mentalis activity may contribute to a downturned mouth. In that case, Botox in the depressor anguli oris (DAO) muscle may be necessary.
- Increasing mentalis activity may also worsen chin dimpling, potentially requiring fillers or a chin implant for support.
Will It Work for You?
Simply contract your chin muscle.
If you notice that your lower lip moves upward and your philtrum appears shorter, then this approach may have an effect on your appearance.
2. If You Want to INCREASE Your Philtrum Height
The opposite approach would be to weaken the mentalis muscle.
The fastest way to do this is through a Botox injection into the mentalis.
Will It Work for You?
Stretch or relax the chin area and observe what happens.
If your lower lip moves downward and your philtrum appears longer, then weakening the mentalis may produce a similar visual effect.
Fast & Easy Methods
Fillers
According to this theory:
- Filler placed beneath the muscle (between the muscle and bone) provides support and may make the muscle function more strongly.
- Filler placed above the muscle adds weight to the tissue and may reduce the muscle's activity.
Chin Implant / Genioplasty
A chin implant or genioplasty may provide additional support to the chin and, by extension, support the mentalis muscle as well.
Natural Method
Another option is to train the mentalis similarly to any other muscle.
A simple method:
1. Place a finger against your chin.
2. Apply light resistance.
3. Contract the mentalis against that resistance.
4. Perform multiple repetitions.
If you already have significant chin dimpling, this approach is probably not worth pursuing.
Alternative Way to Lift the Philtrum and Lip Area
Another theory is to focus on muscles that elevate the lip region:
1. Malaris muscle
2. Smile muscles, including:
- Zygomaticus major
- Zygomaticus minor
- Levator labii superioris
3. Botox in the depressor anguli oris (DAO) muscle
The goal would be to elevate the overall lip area, which may indirectly affect perceived philtrum height.
Will make more posts when I research more of what muscles can or will have an effect on your appearance.
