The title isn't clickbait.
I've been thumbpulling/plierpulling for about 4 months now after my orthodontist recommended we perform sarpe before he applies braces preparing for my BSSO + sliding genioplasty surgery. For context I was still 17 at the time, I went home and measured my pallet to see the intermolar and interpremolar width wasn't extremely narrow but it was mostly the incisors and canines on the top pallet caving inwards slightly (lingual tipping) that gave the appearance of a narrow pallet when I smile.
So anyways, I go home after being quoted for the SARPE along with everything else. But instead of paying the deposit and starting the process I started aggressively thumbpulling along majority of my pallet, and after about a month I found probably the most effective method, being plierpulling which I've been doing atleast twice a day since.
IMPORTANT:
Today I went back to my orthodontist for a revision appointment, he did some measurements again and actually said that I'm now borderline between needing SARPE and not needing it, so instead he opted for using a dental expander for 12 days doing 2 turns daily. They've now put spacers inbetween my molars in preparation to apply the RME. It really fucking hurts to eat right now but I don't really care because if this does work I would've saved so much money.
PS. I know my teeth are all fucked up I literally never smile or show my teeth when I speak it's definitely my biggest flaw.
