Only someone that has never tried pole vault would say this. In college I tried the pole vault a dozen times over about a month's time, every time I tried it I could not hold on to the pole to get any lift. Granted I was doing this entirely without coaching, and in retrospect there were probably "starter poles" that were more flexible available that I was not aware of.
