Premolar Extractions are not as bad as people think, people fear monger online and tell you that the jaws are going to move backwards, but really its only the teeth that are moving.
Im not telling you that Premolar Extractions is good, but i am saying that they are not nearly as bad as people make them out to be.
If you have a narrow pallate, get MSE, not extractions.
Explination:
Premolar Extractions cant physically move your jaws backwards, the reason a lot of people look more recessed after premolar extractions are because the teeth was pushed further back. The teeth help with lip support, labiomental fold, etc. When teeth are extracted and pushed further back, the lips cant loose support, the labiomental fold can get more prominent, but it wont physically move the jaws, thats just not possible.
Bone Resorption
And when people say "yeah but it will cause bone loss and resorption in the area where the tooth was extracted" thats only partially true.
When a tooth is extracted the bone has nothing that penetrates it anymore and will therefore start to go away, but when the front teeth are moved back to sit in the area where the previous teeth where, bone loss will stop because there is now teeth thatt occupy that space. How much bone loss you get depend on the speed that the front teeth are being moved back into the extraction spot.
How Premolar Extractions CAN Lead To Recession
When premolars are extracted and pulled back, the entire mouth gets smaller, this means that the tounge has less space in the mouth and therefore it goes backwards and can make the airway narrower and smaller. This can lead to people having difficulties nose breathing and therefore resorting to mouth breathing instead, which leads to recession.
