Prestige is one of the factors which carries social status, which is why so many rich families will pay for their kids education at a prestigious university like Harvard or Yale. It’s beyond the education, and more about repping a badge that people will universally recognize, and associate with prestige and higher class.

This being said, a lot of students at these universities aren’t actually that smart. They were just better equipped helping them get into universities. Even if they bullshit their degree, they will just benefit from the institutions name. Such a useful halo if you’re actually trying to do something with ur degree, not just using it to continue generation legacy

Im debating whether it's worth doing a PhD at a top uni, and right now im leaning to no. On the one hand, I get the top uni presige. On the other hand, a PhD is a 5 year commitment.

Also why many celebrities and public figures are seen as smart even if it was obviously nepotism that got them through, prestige is everything
