It's an unfortunate truth, but pretty privilege is very real. We live in a world that places a disturbing amount of value on physical appearance. If you don't believe it, chances are you either benefit from it and don't want to admit it, or you've never experienced what it's like to be judged for not fitting into society's narrow beauty standards.
One of my favorite examples is the way people treat butterflies compared to caterpillars. They're the same creature, just in different stages of life, but one is admired and adored while the other is often ignored or even avoided.
“ew that’s so ugly, it looks horrible”
”wow it looks so beautiful”
That's how society works: we reward beauty, even when nothing else has changed.
l'll admit that I catch myself being influenced by it too. When I'm scrolling through TikTok, I'm more likely to stop and watch a video if the person is conventionally attractive. If someone doesn't fit that standard, I notice I'm quicker to scroll past, often without even realizing it. It's not something I'm proud of, but it shows just how deeply embedded this bias is in all of us, even when we don't mean for it to be.
I don't agree with pretty privilege, and I wish it didn't exist. But denying that it does is like denying gravity. It's there, whether we like it or not.
