The deterioration of Stephen Hawking's face over the years should be proof enough that tongue/face muscle contributes to facial appearance.
Here he is pre-disease
Here he is with the disease but notably, he still has control over tongue and enough musculature to be able to communicate and hold up his face. His maxilla has not yet recessed behind his jaw, he still has a slight overbite.
Here he is losing his tongue musculature and ability to communicate. You can notice his face is sinking backwards and down.
Here he is after pretty much totally losing control of everything, just a vegetable moved around for publicity. His handers are writing his statements at this point. His bottom teeth are permanently exposed, the maxilla has totally melted down and back because there's no tongue musculature supporting it.
