The Nazis, speculating on the concepts of "Aryan" and "Nordic", completely divorced them from any linguistic or anthropological content. The emerging geopolitical blocs prompted the leadership of the Third Reich to find a "justification" for including among the "Aryan peoples", for example, Finns, Hungarians and Japanese, and at the same time exclude Poles and Russians from them. The Gypsies, although they were the only people in Europe of the Aryan group proper (Indo-Aryan), were declared to be exterminated.



Since Italy became the first ally of the Third Reich in Europe, Hitler declared Italians to be "true Aryans" as well as Germans. The rapprochement with Japan forced them to find some justification for this in the "Aryan doctrine": the Japanese were declared "Aryans in spirit" or "the highest race among Asians." Since Hungary became an ally of Nazi Germany, the Hungarians were classified as "Aryans", although their language belongs to the Uralic family.



There was ambivalence about the Slavs. The allies of the Third Reich were Slovakia, Croatia, and Bulgaria. Obviously, these were "Aryan countries." At the same time, the Czechs were considered racially inferior to the Germans, but suitable for assimilation. Russians, Poles, and Ukrainians were considered unambiguously inferior, subject to segregation and resettlement. However, former Russian citizen Alfred Rosenberg, the Reich minister of the "eastern territories", tried to give Ukrainians the status of an "Aryan people", but did not meet with the support of other Nazi bosses.



The Nazis nevertheless tried to attract the "Nordic" countries of Northern Europe to their policies, regardless of the real contradictions. The Scandinavians, Dutch, and British were declared racially completely equivalent to the Germans. This helped attract some of the Dutch, Norwegians, Danes, and Flemings to the SS and the Wehrmacht. The Nazis failed to put such an experience on the territory of Great Britain for well-known reasons, and among the British prisoners of war, loners became collaborators. The Nazi policy in occupied France was also characterized by attempts to interest part of the population in "building a new Europe," despite the "low percentage of Nordic blood."



In general, in Western Europe, "racial" considerations only retroactively justified the political steps of the Nazis, dictated by a momentary pragmatic calculation. The exception was actions aimed at the destruction of a priori "racially inferior" Jews and Gypsies.
