Originally the idea was that no one could be a perfect 10, so they rated people up to (and including) 8. Kind of a blackpilled thing to do, implying 8/10 was the highest possible.
Then it got turned into a score that converted to an IRL score. 8 actually works pretty well as a scoring metric though

each digit is broken in half and even into quarters by people, providing more than enough resolution.
Nobody ever does a .25 in the IRL ratings, ever. Sometimes they break it in half and say "6.5" or whatever when someone is not quite a 7 but a 6 feels unfair. So that's 10 * 2 = 20 degrees of resolution.
For the PSL scale oftentimes people here break it into fourths and say 4.75, 5.25, etc. So that's 8*4 = 32 degrees of resolution.
Nonsensical complaint. In actual use it has a higher degree of resolution and therefore accuracy than the usual out of 10 score.

My argument is that any arbitrary number can work for a scale, it really doesn't matter what number arbitrarily "caps" the scale. We've always used 8 so might as well continue to use 8. There's no reason it "just works better bro" to use 10.
