I had a few questions would be nice if y‘all could answer them. So if you never had braces and you dont have a under or overbite can you still have a recessed mandible or maxilla? And also i have a little bump on my nose since 6-12 months and i did not have that 2-3 years ago. What could be cause of that? Is the bump connected to my maxilla? How to spot a recessed maxilla or a flat one?

Take this just as information; if you want to apply or take any medicine or put on braces, ask your doctor.
Yes, it is possible to have a recessed maxilla (upper jaw) or mandible (lower jaw) without having an underbite, overbite, or ever having braces. While bite issues often accompany these conditions, a "recessed" (or retrognathic) jaw refers primarily to the underlying skeletal structure being set too far back in relation to the rest of the face, rather than just the teeth's alignment. [1, 2, 3]
Here are the answers to the specific questions based on typical facial anatomy:

1. Recessed Jaw Without Braces or Bite Issues
  • Recessed Maxilla: Your maxilla can be underdeveloped or set back (flat midface) even if your teeth align decently. Signs include flat cheekbones, a sunken under-eye area, or a "dished-in" facial profile.
  • Recessed Mandible (Lower Jaw): This often appears as a "weak chin" or lack of definition in the jawline (no "throat line").
  • Why No Bite Issue? Sometimes, the teeth compensate for the skeletal structure, or both the top and bottom jaws are similarly recessed, which can mask the typical overbite/underbite. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

2. Causes of a New Bump on the Nose
A small bump that appeared recently (within 6–12 months) could be several things, as a dorsal hump (nose bump) can develop or become more noticeable over time: [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • Callus from Minor Trauma: A past, forgotten injury (e.g., bumping it while sleeping, sports) can lead to cartilage or bone healing with a small, hard bump.
  • Fibrous Papule: A common, harmless bump (flesh-colored or red) that can appear, though usually, they are present for longer than 6–12 months.
  • Cartilage Development/Growth: As we age, nasal cartilage can continue to grow or shift, causing a new bony or cartilaginous bump.
  • Inflammation or Cyst: A minor infection or blockage in the skin pores, such as a sebaceous cyst.
  • Allergies/Polyps: Persistent swelling in the nasal lining. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

3. Connection to the Maxilla
Yes, the bridge and upper part of the nose are structurally connected to the maxilla. A recessed maxilla can actually make a normal-sized nose appear more prominent or "hooked" because the surrounding bone structure is set back. However, a bump specifically on the bridge is more often related to the cartilage or nasal bones themselves rather than a direct sign of a recessed maxilla. [1, 2, 3]

4. How to Spot a Recessed/Flat Maxilla
You can often identify a recessed maxilla through a side-profile analysis: [1]
  • Flat Midface: The area under your eyes and around your nose appears sunken or flat rather than having forward projection.
  • Sunken Under-eye Area: Lack of skeletal support below the eyes (infraorbital rim).
  • "Dished-in" Profile: The midface looks concave, and the nose appears disproportionately prominent.
  • Parallel Check Line: In a side profile, if you draw a line from the brow to the jaw, the cheekbone should ideally be ahead of that line. In a recessed maxilla, the cheeks are flat or set back.
  • Breathing Issues: A recessed maxilla often correlates with a smaller airway, leading to mouth breathing, snoring, or sleep apnea. [1, 4, 5, 6]
If the bump is painful, growing rapidly, or causing concern, it is best to see a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon for an accurate diagnosis.

First of all thanks for your response. So yeah i am pretty sure my mandible isnt recessed since i dont lack foward growth or chin projection but finding out if my maxilla is flat or recessed is hard for me i dont know why. For the bump i went to the doctor. She just told me its nothing special and it is just genetical but my parents dont have this bump.
