It is winter, and lots of viruses are going around. If you start having a hacking cough it is a socialmin as is not ideal. Most cough syrups are placebo bs, these are what are proven to work:
What I use
- Tablet/Cough sytrup containing dextromethorphan 20mg. Take every 4 hours (Adult dose)
- Sedating antihistamine, newer generation antihistamines will not work. Some examples are: Chlorophenamine Malate, and Promethazine. In some countries these are not available OTC. In the UK, they are classed as "R", one level below Prescription Only. To obtain this go to the pharmacy and say your doctor previously gave you the antihistmaine for allergies etc and they will give it to you.
- Drinking water, drink cold water whenever you have an urge to cough
- Inhaled levomenthol, this can be achieved by placing a cough sweet on your tongue and breathing through your mouth (over for mewingcels). This is a local anesthetic and can help with coughing urges in the throat. Ensure you drink water frequently
- note, levomenthol containing cough syrups wont work as levomenthol short acting.
- (Prescription only medication) Beclometasone Inhaler. The dose for asthma is "200–400 micrograms twice daily; increased if necessary up to 800 micrograms twice daily, dose to be adjusted as necessary.". For cough suppresion I use 200mcg in the morning, repeated every 3-4 hours for a maximum for 4 doses in the day. This is a corticosteriod, use with caution.
- (Prescription only medication) Salbutamol Inhaler. 200mcg to relieve short term severe worsening of cough w/ shortness of breath or chest tightness. Used to treat asthma but can help with repeated dry coughs.
- Ibuprofen 400mg once in the morning: may have some benefit but unclear, use your discretion.
Warnings:
- If you experience chest pain/shortness of breath/difficulty breathing or anything else along those lines see a doctor/nurse. They may be able to prescribe antibiotics if its bacterial and if its viral can evaluate you for serious disease.
- Most of the medications above inhibit your natrual response to infection, do not take them if you are staying home or not going anywhere where you need to appear healthy
Other info:
- A single dose of zinc taken on the onset of symptoms of a cold may reduce length of infection, however has no effect when taken later on in the progression of the infection
- Supplementing vitamin D reduces risk of infections
- If you suspect it is covid get tested and ask doctor for paxlovid it will reduce chance of developing long covid
