The short answer is that you generally can't target fat loss from just your face. Facial fat decreases as your overall body fat decreases, and genetics play a major role in how lean your face looks.
If your goal is the quickest safe improvement, here's what tends to make the biggest difference:
1. Reduce water retention (can make a difference within days)
A puffy face isn't always due to fat.
- Cut back on high-sodium processed foods.
- Stay well hydrated (dehydration can increase water retention).
- Limit alcohol.
- Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep.
- If you notice puffiness after certain meals, pay attention to whether high-carb or salty foods are a trigger.
2. Lose overall body fat (weeks to months)
This is the only reliable way to reduce facial fat.
A sustainable fat loss rate is about 0.5–1% of your body weight per week.
- Eat in a moderate calorie deficit (around 300–500 calories/day below maintenance).
- Get enough protein (roughly 1.2–1.8 g/kg of body weight if you're trying to preserve muscle while losing fat).
- Strength train 2–4 times per week.
- Add cardio if it helps you maintain the calorie deficit.
3. Build muscle
Adding muscle to your body can improve your overall proportions, making your face appear leaner even before you've lost a large amount of fat.
4. Be patient with facial changes
For many people, the face is one of the first places fat loss becomes noticeable. For others, it's one of the last. Genetics largely determine this.
What doesn't work
- "Face fat burning" exercises or chewing exercises don't selectively burn facial fat.
- Most "jawline gadgets" have little evidence behind them.
- Spot reduction (losing fat from one specific area) isn't supported by research.
If your face suddenly became fuller
If facial fullness developed quickly or is accompanied by swelling, pain, or other symptoms, it may not be fat. Allergies, certain medications (like corticosteroids), thyroid issues, and other medical conditions can cause facial swelling and should be evaluated if persistent or concerning.
