I have family members that have smoked for +2 decades and they're fine now in their late50s/early60s they only have arthritis. that's anectodal of course so it doesn't mean much but it's more of a chances game

it definetly does harm both short and long term, I've felt short term effects (shortness of breath) after chain smoking or smoking a lot in one day, but there are many things that influence your health on different levels

Hard cases don't disprove actual science. Your family members mightve just been a lucky minority out of the many cases where people developed cancers and longterm irreversible damage. A single cigarette may not cause much damage but it never stays "a single" cigarette, because it gets you hooked, some sooner some later; One of the earliest signs is to reach for one during stressful moments, thats when your brain already starts associating nicotine with relief. You cant train any animal to smoke because it instinctively rejects anything that numbs or damages its senses. Just because it didnt happen to your father, doesnt mean it wont happen to you. The only valid thing to smoke is a cuban cigar and only of the expensive types because atleast you dont smoke fucking tar with it AND it's only occasional. It's like beer and champagne. Garbage beer you can drink everyday, but champagne you only get to drink on occasions.
