There is an insane cope to believe during history and even nowadays, that white features are considered ideal everywhere.

Like @streege said, just because there is a preference for lighter, doesn't mean it has anything to do with European people.
A large part of why lighter skin is seen as attractive is because it signified upper class (not having to stay in the sun doing labor jobs). This is especially true in India. They aren't literally trying to become white people.
