Well yes Willam his family and most of the nobles under him were Normans with Norman troops ofc but you have to understand by his generation the only land they’ve known is Catholic normandy nothing related to Odin or Scandinavia. Take most Americans as an example do they call themselves American? Yes. but most aren’t related to the original English colonists it’s more of an identity they bond with - so it’s not too hard to understand that in wars men die but war needs soldiers which means you don’t compose your army of just Normans when you rule over French lands with plenty of able body French men willing to hop on a ship to invade England. So Normans ruled the upper parts of society but the lower was composed of Frenchmen and Normans even in England it was the same just add anglos to the mix that formed the English identity.
