The reasons for single motherhood will also differ from regions. Rather than out-of-wedlock birth being the cause for it, it can also be widowing or divorce. For example, single motherhood is not that common in Nigeria(by Western standards), in 2014 it was around 13%(compared to the astonishing 43% in South Africa, source p. 2) but it's very common in the Northeastern region, especially Borno state. It's not for the most part caused by premarital childbearing though, it's because there is a crisis in that region caused by rampant terrorism(boko haram), so a lot of women end up widowed.
