Richard Coper woke at 7:12 a.m. to the sound of a car alarm. apartment stood on the fourth floor of a narrow brick building wedged between a laundromat and an abandoned furniture store. Cars filled both sides of the street below, a extremely forgettable view. Richard lay beneath his blanket and stared at the ceiling as the alarms continued, Then another joined it. Then another. Within seconds, the street outside was screaming. Hundreds of alarms overlapped into one mechanical howl. Horns blared. Sirens wailed. Somewhere nearby, glass shattered. Richard squeezed his eyes shut and pulled the blanket over his head.“Shut up,” he muttered.
His own voice sounded small beneath the noise. e had gone to bed at two in the morning after eating a frozen chicken dinner over the sink. He had watched three episodes of a show he did not like, scrolled through photographs of people he did not know, and fallen asleep wearing yesterday’s shirt.
