“Niche appeal”

what does that mean

In facial aesthetics, there are 4 pillars of attractiveness: harmony, misc, dimo, and angularity. While all of these correlate almost 1:1 with overall beauty, having an unusual combination and/or a really extreme value in any pillar will make your appeal more polarized. Some may find you more attractive than what your overall score would suggest, while others may find you less attractive. The average rating across a large sample size will still be the same, but the bell curve of ratings will be wider. If someone is objectively below average but has really high dimorphism, they may fall into a category where most find them ugly, but some actually find them kind of cute or attractive.

While men have less variation in what we find attractive than women (based on empirical findings), we are still subject to this effect to some extent. Therefore, when someone has niche appeal, they are only considered attractive by a smaller subset of the population than is typical for someone with that overall rating.
