I recently visited a literary club meeting and was once again reminded of how useless, or even harmful, reading can be most of the times. If you prefer some light fiction, then better watch some movie, exact same thoughts-empty thing but easier to consume. Some hard-fiction, like Dostoevsky or Sartre, is mostly mental masturbration, which sometimes can be not only useless, but also harmful.
Notes from the underground is brilliant peace of literature, maybe one of best in history of mankind, i even had some joy reading it, analysing it, quoting it in discussions. And yet it's utterly useless. Even harmful, because I've seen myself in this underground man, unhappy, small, lonely man. And it was painful to realise that I'm just like him. Same thing with Kierkegaard, Camus, Sartre, Cioran - great literature, but it just traumatize you.
Philosophy is like mental masturbration with both your hands and legs, it can be useful for constructing your own perception of reality but if you're forced to engage in such activities and reevaluate your values, it means that you're a failure who hasn't been able to fulfill yourself within the accepted perception of the world. In other words, philosophy is a haven for losers. Social science and polisci is basically philosophy, they didn't managed to became real sciences with strong evidence base.
Non-fiction is bunch of crap 99% of the time and even if you managed to find really useful information, that doesn't mean ur be able to do it in practice, since information won't do much without social reinforcement. You will be more likely to do something because your friend doess it, not because some book says it
So read something only if it's requered for your degree (STEM) and you will be able to earn good money or be cause you genuinely enjoying it, which is rare.
