Humans prefer the smell of MCH Dissimilar mates (Proof in the Links)
MCH is a chunk of your DNA that codes for a significant part of your immune system. MCH dissimilar partners have children with stronger immune systems. In Humans MCH is also referred to as HLA (human leukocyte antigen)
Many animals, including humans have been shown to be attracted to the smell produces by MCH dissimilar mates.

We know that we can distinguish this smell.

We also know that it produces healthier offspring when we mate with MCH dissimilar mates, so it would stand to reason that we have evolved to be attracted to the smell of MCH dissimilar mates.
But it's a little more complicated in humans. Single women prefer the smell of MCH similar mates, and women in relationships prefer the smell of MCH dissimilar mates. There are many ways you could take this, but I take it as women looking for genetic variation through different fathers, so that there is a better chance some of their children will survive. However, other studies show that if the couple is MCH dissimilar then she is less likely to want to want to cheat.
In addition the contraception pill reverses a woman's preference if she' on it.

Study Below shows that women prefer men who have a medium level of differences in MCH. The preference of male oders is paternally inherited.

The Point of all of this, is that there is not a universal attractive smell.
So Why not Use a Perfume
If you're only going to attract a segment of the population with your smell weather or not you use a perfume, then you are wasting your money buying one. Also, when it comes to compatible genes, mate choice goes both ways. You are more likely to love the smell of the women that love your smell. By changing only your smell, you are hurting your chances for this kind of smell match.
Natural Pheromones:
So we've proven your natural scent is important in attracting a match. Showering too often not only strips your skin of protectant oils, and your micro biom, and dries out your skin, but also washes away your natural pheromones.
I could give you a bunch of wild personal anecdotes on this, that made me a believer long before finding the studies to back it up, as well as plenty of anecdotes from other people, but I'm leaving this thread with only the scientific studies because those are the hardest most concreate proof.
Here's a looksmax thread with a related hypothesis, if you would like to discuss this one:
