It's an adaptation of two classic Japanese stories written in the medieval period blended into one story. One of the stores was indeed horror, the other one was a tragity.

I wouldn't say it's artistic. Pretty realistic for 1570's rural Japan.

This I'd have to say has to be my favorite movie of all time. A very gritty essential gangster film that happens to be a masterpiece. Most people have never heard of this movie but I fell in love with it the first time I saw it 25 years ago. Made by one of Vietnam's best directors. This movie is banned in Vietnam, or at least was the last time I checked, even though I brought a collector's edition DVD that I bought online in 2008 through Vietnamese customs in 2013, 2015, and again in 2017. The director was also banned by the Vietnamese government from directing for 5 years for making this film.

Anyways, I really like gook movies. The link I provided is the full film on YouTube. It's in Viet but has English subtitles if you press the captions button. If you watch any of the films I suggested this would be the best I'd say.
