Women only have a strong desire for intimacy and a partner while ovulating, while men desire a partner all the time. This causes the amount of men seeking female companionship to outnumber the women seeking male companionship, which means that the majority of females can be satisfied by a minority of males. The female reproductive system has a means of preventing this in order to promote biodiversity, which is synchronization of the reproductive cycle among a group of females.
When a group of females are around each other a lot, their reproductive cycles "sync up", causing them to ovulate at the same time. In a traditional small community, all of the women will be seeking a male partner simultaneously, allowing for a more equal distribution of sexual availability. The advent of remote communication has nullified this phenomenon. When women are able to communicate to each other via text, social media, etc, reproductive synchronization is prevented due to the lack of pheromone signaling. This has caused a decrease in female availability for the average man, and promoting increased sexual selectivity among females.
TLDR: Men are biologically driven to perpetually seek a partner, while women are only driven to seek a mate once a month. Female reproductive synchronization prevented this in the past, but has since been circumvented by communications technology.
