It's true in nature but stopped being true once humans developed consciousness. When it comes to lower life forms, basically yeah your children are you. Same genes which is what's the point of life, preserving your genes. An animal, like turtle, has children and once they grow up, it's like that's the same turtle, zero difference if it's that turtle or another turtle it's a turtle who gives a fuck. Not to mention some lower life forms like jellyfish or plants where they're basically clones of each other.

But with humans it's more complicated because apart from inherited DNA there's also huge amount of changes that happen from life history and experiences. Not only the memory and consciousness is created, but also epigenetic changes are happening all the time. Not even you are the same you after few years, and not even to get started about another human that has only half of your DNA + recombination.

This is why aging and death is so horrible to humans while being no big deal to animals (some animals even die immediately after reproducing, like octopuses or mayflies, or live only to get eaten by it's spawn, like some species of spiders) - we are different and affected by world and experiencing it so much more that our offspring no longer feels like it's us, and no longer feels like it gives us immortality.
Of course that doesn't mean you're cursed to wallow in nihilism. Passing your genes still allows at least part of you to survive - better than nothing at all.
