I really fucking love this quote from World war 1:

“One day I secured a direct hit on an enemy encampment, saw bodies or parts of bodies go up in the air, and heard the desperate yelling of the wounded or the runaways,” wrote a Belgian officer during World War I. “I had to confess to myself that it was one of the happiest moments of my life.”

But..but..but...it's only the EVIL humans who enjoy killing! We aren't all just sociopaths who merely suppress our natural urges for the greater good!

You do realize that soldiers are trained and conditioned this way? Not everyone is a soldier. Some people kill and deeply regret their actions to the point they commit suicide because of guilt. If all humans were sociopaths then guilt wouldn't be an emotion.

Humans aren't evil nor are they good little angels. They are selfish and they look out for themselves and what they care about. Those peasants were just trying to improve their quality of life by using dead bodies. I don't think that's necessarily evil, they were already dead, the bodies aren't doing anything they're just going to rot and decompose.

Would it really be guilt though? I've done some really bad stuff. At first, I thought the feeling I experienced was guilt but came to realize it wasn't the same. It's more paranoia/fear of the consequences. Never felt guilt my entire life even when I was a small kid.

this would be the perfect way to put it, like years ago when i bought something with my mothers credit card, i felt so bad and anxious, and i ended up just telling her about it hoping to be forgived. ive always thought of that as pretty much the same thing as guilt but idk, guess not tbh
thats what i would feel like if i killed someone, it would probably eat away at me and i wouldnt be able to live normally, id eventually have to confess the crime or something

Read the article. The researcher says she was expecting to find endless horror stories but instead she discovered tons of soldiers actually just loved killing things.
