Is resistance training a legit way to lose weight if you’re fat?
 
Yes because it will help keep your hormone levels up during the calorie deficit

Ideally you would do high saturated fat and protein diet while cutting with some resistance training

calories in vs. calories out

The calorie consumption when training with weights is not that high. Weight training is to gain or maintain muscles, not for weight loss.
