going to get me a retin A prescription from the dermatologist, would you argue that in the meantime (2 weeks until I get an appointment) it would be helpful to buy a retinol cream and use it, maybe to also get my skin used to vit A or are the creams pure copium?

Getting used to Retinol/Retinohydrate/Retinol-ester wouldn't be a bad idea.
You would still peel when you would switch to something stronger but doing it for 2 weeks instead of few months seams redundant and investing in some sunscreen would be better option.
