In August 2018, people looking to spend the end of their summer swimming near a town in northwest France had to make a change of plans. Local officials from Landevennec banned swimming and diving in the Bay of Brest due to an overzealous male dolphin named Zafar.

In the past, Zafar was known as a playful dolphin to visitors. He allowed people to grab onto his dorsal fin and took them on rides. His need for a particular type of human interaction, however, left swimmers feeling unsafe as he tried to engage in intimate activities. A marine mammal expert told newspaper Ouest-France that "he is in heat," explaining why the dolphin suddenly started pursuing people.

Zafar reportedly blocked a female swimmer as she tried to return to shore, rubbed up against people and boats, and used his nose to lift another woman out of the water. Landevennac's mayor, Roger Lars, said he issued the ban "to preserve the safety of the people." Visitors aren't allowed to be within 50 yards of the dolphin.
