After Madrid knocked out Machester City in the 23/24 ucl quarter final via penalty shoot out he said "To be honest, today I saw only one team". That was the same year he won the ballon dor and Madrid chose not to attend. He obviously felt disrespected and decided to string Madrid along, Perez was smart enough to be suspicious of Rodri which is why he was hesitant on signing him at first but then he gave the green light. As soon as he gave him the green light, he chose to sign for Barcelona instead.
