Christian Death’s “Romeo’s Distress” begins with a funeral organ, the victim tonight is the married woman from the gym, the one who still wears the ring like it protects her, I told her my wife was out of town (I do not have a wife), she came over wearing a perfume that costs more than her dignity, I have her bent over the balcony railing, thirty floors up, city lights flickering like dying stars (God, I loved those sodium street lamps), the song howls, I enter her from behind while the knife rests against her carotid, every thrust pushes her further over the edge, she begs between moans because fear and pleasure sound the same when you’re this close to falling, I cut shallow across her throat just enough for the blood to run down her tits while I keep fucking her, “Romeo’s distress,” I whisper in time with the lyrics, and she sobs my name like a whore, I pull out at the last second, come across the open wound, and then push, she falls screaming into the night, the song still playing in my ears all the way down, I step back inside, I pour a whiskey from my collection as the track comes to an end, I remove the headphones to see the woman that I have just killed in my daydream, in front of me, finishing her set
