Most people besides in the metropoles work just to survive because instead of investing the money to help the people in his own nation, Putin decides to throw it away. The war costs him approx half a billion $ each day.

Ukraine will either way receive tons of aid from western nations, EU, US, and will be rebuild with modern technology and infrastructure. Meanwhile Russia will be destroyed economically and thrown back centuries.

Tbh, I've been to some villages that are like that, in Urals/Siberian. It's not pretty, but what's saddened me the most is how people there just spent all their life wallowing in dirt to grow some plants. At least in Causasus villages people slaughtered animals and ate meat everyday. And deep in the mountains there are supposedly people who only really eat meat and bread that they grow themselves, those guys often live to a 100. They'd probably go for 120 if they ate raw meat.
