I talked with an ophthalmologist pretty in depth about this actually and he basically said it was for retards and no reputable surgeon would actually do it. Mechanistically causes pigmentary glaucoma & light sensitivity. In later life you would need more eye stuff done because of it & makes your vision worse than it otherwise would have been.
