Safest way to lighten skin

By "lighten" I'm not trying to pull a Michael Jackson or racebend, but I have often found that when I use sunscreen or products that make my skin a shade whiter, my face seems to glow more. Idk if any of the South Asian guys here might have used Fair and Lovely or other skin whiteners, but I have heard those products have some nasty chemicals so I cut them out long, long ago.

I should also mention my body and upper arms are quite a bit fairer than my face, so maybe the better question is how to revert to my default skin color lol.
