Self-tanning

I feel like self-tanning is rarely discussed here compared to supplements like Beta-carotene and Astaxanthin for colouring . Personally I find results pretty good from self-tanners. Never had anyone commenting on that it look artificial or w/e and result is instant+controllable+cheap. Is there any particular reason why it's rarely mentioned, or is it?
