Ibn Atheer Al Jazry said in his book Jaamia’ Al Usool fee ahadeeth Al Rasool, Chapter 2 page 452

”and the black means the Arabs because the predominant colours amongst them is Udmah (dark brown to jet black), and Udmah is (a colour that) is near to (the colour) jet black and Ahmar (red) means the ajam (non-Arab Romans and Persians) because the colours that are most predominant amongst them are white and red (very white).”
