Shall I start hostelmaxxxing to meet new people?

Im considering solo travelling later this year. Shall I stay in a mixed gender hostel to meet people? Has this ever been tried?

I usually don't want to stay with other people and would prefer staying at 3* or 4* hotels (not 5* because they're overpriced garbage). But desperate times call for desperate measures. Looks like I will have to stay in cheap hostels.

Look at all these wonderful and fun people I could spend time with.

I think I would fit in perfectly. Don't you think? I definitely think I would.
