I cut my own hair so I usually do a fade type of haircut with a 0 or 1 on the sides. The reason isn't for looks but because I hate cutting my hair every week because it grows so fast, so doing a 0 allows my hair to grow and look best about 1-2 weeks post haircut, and I don't have to cut my hair until the 1 month mark.

flick of the wrist and some trial and error. My guards are 16, 12, 9, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and 0mm so I just use each one and flick up. Took me about a year of experience to get it right. After 12mm flicking isn't even necessary IMO, the difference isn't noticeable at that length.
