Whenever I shave I get spots but I need to shave frequently to not have scruffy stubble. Is there any technique/thing I should be doing to help my abused skin?

shave with the grain instead of against to minimise irritation

Use a safety razor

Wash your face with warm water before shaving, Use a safety razor, use a good shaving cream, and make sure the razor is sharp. If you have thick hair like me after 2-3 shaves you need a new blade.
