Short hair looks awkward, but long looks filthy

Wheat Waffles says I should get a fade, but in these pictures that I've collected across the net, fade just makes people look goofy.

But on the other hand, longer hair only works in pictures, in reallife it just looks dirty and unkept

The only case where longer hair works is when the quality of the hair is great, but I've never been able to figure out how to make hair quality great, it just sometimes is and other times isn't
