When your midface is drastically different in length compared to upper or lower thirds. They should be in a relatively similar zone of length.

One handy way is to look at the smile . If the philtrum is at a reasonable length yet you can't see the persons smile when they try to the you know the midface is too short. Let me illustrate. For patient to have this smile a vertical lefort 1 is needed to elongate the midface .
