There were very few single mothers back then...Also, they didn't quite provide you with stuff for free, everyone had to work, not working was illegal, however this meant that even if you were lazy and incompetent it was very difficult to get fired, they would just put you instead in a place where you didn't have to do much, half of the jobs back then were pretty much useless - all sorts of guards and supervisors, in places where there was no need for them, these people show up to work and simply sat all day.
