Depends if you want to extentuate your long face or try to minimise/hide it. Some people look very good in harmony with a long midface, but for lot of people it can slightly hurt facial harmony. In that case keeping sides somewhat long can help create more rounder illusion of face. Chico for example looks better with short sides/cut that extentuates his longer face, cuz he can pull off the long face very well imo.
