Should I get a loose perm?

I want bulkiness for the sides since if I have my hair too short on the sides I look so strange like this (old photo of when I first joined forum):

Yea I know ive tried to re create that style but dont know what I did to do it you think I could get it cut to look like that more often?

Show a hair stylist/barber that pic and they should direct on what products and methods to use for that style

Thanks would you advice sticking to that style then? I think it looks good as well its just I cannot re create that "3 am mirror look" again, Do you have any other advice for me? (Im going to see a doctor about my skin soon)
