In the WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale) context, PSI and WMI are two of the four main Index Scores that make up a person’s cognitive profile. Here’s what they mean:

🧠

WMI – Working Memory Index

What it measures:

  • Your ability to hold, manipulate, and use information in your mind over short periods.
  • Mental focus, concentration, and basic mental arithmetic.

Core subtests:

  1. Digit Span – repeat sequences of numbers forward, backward, and in order.
  2. Arithmetic – solve math problems mentally (no paper).

Supplemental subtest:

  • Letter-Number Sequencing – reorder jumbled letters and numbers (e.g., “C-3-A-1” → “1-3-A-C”).

Why it’s important:

  • Reflects attention, concentration, and mental control.
  • High WMI is associated with good problem-solving, reading comprehension, and academic performance.

⚡

PSI – Processing Speed Index

What it measures:

  • The speed and accuracy with which you can scan, process, and respond to visual information.
  • Attention to detail and fine motor speed.

Core subtests:

  1. Symbol Search – quickly determine if a symbol is present in a list.
  2. Coding – copy symbols paired with numbers using a key, as fast as possible.

Supplemental subtest:

  • Cancellation – scan rows of shapes and mark target shapes.

Why it’s important:

  • Measures efficiency in simple, routine visual tasks.
  • Slower processing speed can affect test-taking, reading fluency, and real-life tasks like form-filling or scanning environments.

🧠 Quick Comparison:

IndexFocusSkills Assessed
WMIMental “RAM”Focus, mental math, short-term memory
PSISpeed & efficiencyVisual scanning, attention, motor speed

Would you like help understanding what high or low scores in these areas mean functionally or clinically
