I know they got Viet mafia in Cambo. I think they might work with the Russians. Don't kniw what kind of stuff they do. Seriously though, I couldn't see Khmer girls particularily being attracted to "yoons". Traditionally Vietnamese are considered enemies in Cambodia.

Oh yeah dude. I actually sent this German kid on a bus from Phnom Penh to Vang Vieng with the promise that I'd follow suit in a few days. I needed his job so I befriended him and convinced him to leave. People liked him too much at the place where I needed to work. I had to dig myself out of a hole because I lost all my money smoking meth. He was just a young innocent backpacker full of hope for the world. A few days after he arrived in Laos he sent me a few frantic emails asking where I was. We were both out of money but before he left I told him I'd stay behind in Cambodia for a couple days and wait for an ex-girlfriend in China to wire me some money before following suit. It was all lies. I didn't answer his emails, and I kind of felt bad about it but for me it was life or death. He would have eventually caved and asked his wealthy parents for a plane ticket back to Germany.

Anyways, Laos is a backpacker hotspot. There's lots of tubing and drug parties going on there. Strict country for the locals but the authorities leave the foreign tourists alone and look the other way when it comes to drugs. I've never been there.

It can be rough. 3rd world without any sugar coting. If you're living/traveling there alone you better develope some street smarts. You better know how to keep from looking like a victim. How to say no and be extra assertive. Locals can be very bad, and the expats who live there can be worse.

The pros are excellent weather, everything's extremely cheap, and it's fun if you like fast paced heavy sh*t. Like the drama that goes on in the expat community there can be pretty heavy. If you stay for more than a few months you're likely to meet at least one expat who ends up dead during your time there. And you're bound to meet more than one who will end up doing time in Prey Sar.

The cons are Cambodia can be extremely unsafe. Nobody's coming to help you if something bad happens. The police are more like a mafia of their own. Be prepaired to pay many bribes if you get a motorbike (which you'll have to if you end up living there). Even if you're smart and know how to avoid paying they'll still stop you on your bike constantly for no reason and try to shake you down. It get's particually bad around Khmer New Year (Like a month or two after Tet/Chinese New Year) when everybody goes back to the provinces to be with theur families. All the cops want extra "tea money" during that time. They're too lazy to chase you down if you're able to turn around quickly and run from them, but they'll pop out around corners on foot and ambush you by blocking the road. If you're not a tourist you'll get to know where their usual ambush points are so you can avoid them. But during the time before Khmer New Year though they like to switch things up and become more unpredictable. It got so bad one time when I was living in Sihanoukeville that I just stopped riding my moto unless it was absolutely necessary. I guess on the flip side they don't care if you drive drunk. Just pay the cops $2 and they'll help you back on your bike.

Well.......you guys did rape a lot of the young girls at the same time you were saving them. And more recently Mr. Hun Sen has kind of been selling a lot of Cambo's resources out from under the country to Vietnam. Some other sh*t too that goes way back that they can't even remember. Which if I'm not mistaken is the same reason Pol Pot's dumb ass attacked Vietnam in the first place. Some sh*t that goes way back that the Vietnamese have forgotten.

could most these things be solved by carrying a knife and using a cheap flip phone when out instead of an smartphone?

Yeah, I always carried a knife. As for the phone just use the same kind you normally would but don't walk and use it at the same time. Choose only one pocket to keep your valuables in while keeping the other one empty.
